Bulgaria has activated the EU civil protection mechanism for medical products. This was announced by European Commission spokesman Balazs Ujvari.

Even though no reason is given, the mechanism is probably being activated because of the problems in Bulgaria’s health system connected with the surge in the number of Covid-19 cases in the country. The mechanism was activated yesterday; the Bulgarian authorities have asked for a considerable number of ventilators and masks, patient monitors, emergency ward beds.

The aim of the activation of the mechanism is to guarantee that if the pandemic situation deteriorates rapidly, the necessary equipment can be delivered immediately. For the time being our medical workers are coping with the epidemic wave and no additional equipment delivery is necessary, the Ministry of Health press service stated.
