The existing vaccines could be less effective against the new Omicron variant, but they should still provide protection against it, the former Chairman of the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases Professor Todor Kantardzhiev said for bTV.

In his words, the new coronavirus variant may have occurred in an HIV patient infected with Covid-19. Professor Kantardzhiev called on Bulgarians to receive a Covid-19 vaccine. In his view, people aged 65 and over should get a booster shot.

According to Todor Kantardzhiev, Bulgaria’s authorities must tighten the anti-epidemic measures. “More people must undergo Covid-19 tests and the samples must be quickly sent to laboratories for genomic sequencing.”
