Bulgarian President: Kiril Petkov's visit to the Republic of North Macedonia was a hasty decision

Any hasty action of the Bulgarian government and any preliminary positive signal could be misinterpreted as concessions from the Bulgarian side. This was stated by Bulgarian President Rumen Radev in response to journalistic questions on the occasion of the meeting of the President of the Republic of North Macedonia with representatives of the separatist organization OMO Ilinden, proclaiming the existence of the so-called "Macedonian minority" in Bulgaria. Radev said such behaviour diverted the Republic of North Macedonia from the path to the EU membership. He stressed that Macedonian Bulgarians were fighting for equality, which could be guaranteed in North Macedonia's constitution by registering them along with other nations, and for full integration into the public life of the country.

"Prime Minister Kiril Petkov's visit to the Republic of North Macedonia was hasty, I had frank talks with him," Radev said. He stressed that it was important for Bulgarian diplomacy to fully realize its professional capacity, not to trust external expertise, non-governmental organizations and not to succumb to external pressure.
