Captain of Vera Su cargo ship was given suspended sentence of three years

The captain of the cargo ship Vera Su which ran aground near Kamen Bryag was given a suspended sentence. He was given a sentence of three years in prison, suspended for five years. The fifty nine-year-old defendant will have to pay court costs amounting to EUR 3,683.08, the Prosecutor’s Office announced. The prosecution is investigating the cause of the accident, as well as the damage to the environment. It is also checking how adequate the actions of the competent authorities were.

On September 20, 2021, the Turkish cargo vessel Vera Su, loaded with nitrogenous fertilizer, ran aground near Yaylata protected area in the Black Sea. It was towed to the port of Varna more than one month after it ran aground.
