Viticulturists protest for higher subsidies

A protest organized by the National Association of Bulgarian Vinegrowers temporarily blocked 5 major roads in the country. They insist that subsidies increase from EUR 15 to EUR 150 per 0.1 hectare, as in other EU countries. The protesters are also demanding the resignation of the Director of the Executive Agency on Vine and Wine, Krasimir Koev.

We operate on a single market with our colleagues from Western Europe and Romania, where viticulture is well-subsidised which makes us uncompetitive. 15% of my colleagues are ready to abandon viticulture. There is a labor shortage in our sector, but the state is neglecting us. We receive humiliatingly-low financial assistance which is incommensurate with our necessities, Dimitar Haralabmiev, who is one of the organizers of the protest in the town of Pleven, said for the BNR
