Russian diplomats accused of spying have left the country

The two Russian diplomats accused of espionage have departed from Bulgaria together with their families, the Russian embassy in Sofia has confirmed.

On Tuesday they were declared personae non gratae and given 48 hours to leave the country. On the same day the prosecutor’s office announced it had exposed one more Russian diplomat in Bulgaria as a spy, a contact man for a Bulgarian retired general who has been handing over secret information to Russia. The high-ranking officer has been disclosing state secrets to Russia since 2016, for which he has been arrested.
