Bulgaria negotiates postponement of Russian oil embargo

The meeting of the diplomats from the EU's 27 member states in Brussels, which discussed plans for a possible oil embargo against Russia, ended without result.

They failed to reach agreement on the implementation of a new package of sanctions to embargo Russian crude oil and refined oil products by the end of the year.

More talks are to be held, as some member states, including Bulgaria, have asked to be exempted from the phaseout embargo.

"Bulgaria is negotiating to postpone our country's embargo on Russian oil so that our refinery has time to prepare technically for the processing of another type of oil," MP Ivan Manev from We Continue the Change party and a member of the energy committee in parliament, told BNT.

If Bulgaria fails  to negotiate a postponement, the last option is a veto on our side, but this is unlikely to happen, Ivan Manev predicted and explained that the Bulgarian refinery currently uses 40% non-Russian oil.
