Library staff organized a one-hour warning strike today over the failure of the government to live up to an agreement on minimum basic starting salaries.

Representatives of the trade union organizations stated that libraries are forced to work in the condition of library service standards that have been adopted but remain unfulfilled, and with totally inadequate financing by the Ministry of Culture. “These circumstances make it impossible for us to fulfill our important public functions,” the protesters say.

The Podkrepa TU is demanding a 40% rise of the budgets of regional libraries, while the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria is demanding a 25% increase in subsidies for all sectors of culture.
