Bulgaria’s Vice President Iliana Yotova was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of the Municipality of Vinga, Western Romania.

"Our door is wide open for our Bulgarian friends," said Mayor Ioan Negrei at a formal sitting of the local council.  "During my term of office, the community in Vinga shall live in peace, understanding and respect, regardless of ethnicity and nationality," Mayor Ioan Negrei said.

Nearly 600 ethnic Bulgarians live in the municipality of Vinga. They preserve Bulgarian traditions, language and culture. The first Bulgarians moved to Romania three centuries ago. They fled their country after the Chiprovtsi Uprising. The Banat Bulgarians are the oldest diaspora in Romania.
