Between 1912 and 1918, Bulgaria fought in 3 wars for national unification, which ended with the unjust Treaty of Neuilly-sur-Seine that required Bulgaria to cede various territories. The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO) started a struggle for an independent Macedonia, where human rights of Bulgarians would be protected. In 1923, IMRO began to celebrate the Holy Spirit Monday as the Day of Macedonian Bulgarians and the fallen Bulgarian heroes.
