Just 54% of Bulgarians say that the war in Ukraine is a threat to EU security and support the development of a common European policy on defense. The average level for the EU is about 70 percent, data by a Eurobarometer survey from May show.

Most of Bulgarians disapprove of sending financing and weapons for Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression. 30% approve of sending military aid as half of them are firm supporters and the others are “willing to agree”. 42% completely oppose helping Ukraine with weapons and ammunition and another 20% are willing to support this position. The main reason for these answers is fear that the war could spread to Bulgaria, according to the survey. 42% of respondents also oppose European sanctions against Russia.

Four months after the start of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expected Russia to step up attacks on his country this week as the EU summit in Brussels discusses whether to support Ukraine's membership bid.
