Large-scale crackdown on drug-driving starts in Bulgaria

A large-scale operation against driving under the influence of narcotics is underway in Bulgaria. This was announced at an extraordinary briefing by outgoing Prime Minister Kiril Petkov."We have decided to declare war on all recidivist drivers, especially those who drive after having used drugs , Petkov said.

The crackdown on traffic crime followed Tuesday night's tragic car crash in Sofia in which two young women died. The driver, former Levski football player Georgi Semerdjiev, who has about 50 traffic violations, fled the scene and a Sofia police officer helped him hide, but he was later detained. Outgoing Interior Minister Boyko Rashkov said Semerdjiev had had his licence revoked since 2005, but had been driving various vehicles until today. A blue rotating police ligh and a baton were found in his car.

Tonight, citizens are to protest again at the scene of the serious crash in Sofia.
