The minimum wage in Bulgaria should be equal to 50% of the average wage and 60% of the median wage. Such a proposal, based on a draft European directive, was made by outgoing Labour and Social Policy Minister Georgi Gyokov at a meeting with social partners.
Options for fixing different minimum wage mechanisms were discussed at the meeting. According to Gyokov, a transparent and automatic mechanism for defining the minimum wage is needed to ensure predictability for both employers and trade unions. He reminded that since 2010 there have been a number of talks on minimum wage, led by different governments, and there is a consensus among social partners for setting such a mechanism. Discussions between employers and trade unions are forthcoming.
