A new protected area "Kamchia" already covers 129,000 hectares, including 7,500 hectares of marine areas, announced the Ministry of Environment. According to the ministerial order, the territory of the new protected area extends over several villages in the Varna region.

This new area was declared protected as a result of the criminal proceedings against Bulgaria for non-compliance with its commitments under the Habitat Directive. Оutgoing Minister of Environment Borislav Sandov said the decree should have been signed before 2014, but due to the non-compliance with the Directive and the lack of decisions in this regard, the EC had filed a lawsuit against Bulgaria in the EU Court of Justice.
