Stopping environmental assessment of Struma Highway is motivated by EU requirements, former minister says

There is no loss of EU funds for Bulgaria, the former Minister of Environment Borislav Sandov told BNR. There is no more money for the "Struma" highway through the Kresna Gorge to Greece in this program period. The money is aimed at the "Europe" highway from Sofia to Serbia, Sandov explained.

We would lose money if we didn't comply with EU’s environmental legislation, the former minister claims. The suspension of the environment assessment for the highway route, which he signed in the last hours of the outgoing government, was motivated by the negative opinion of the European Commission on the quality of the assessment conducted in 2017. This opinion was expressed in a letter from Brussels received in the ministry on July 27. Sandov defined saving the Kresna Gorge as a personal mission.
