Minister of Interior: The gendarmerie remains at the Kapitan Andreevo BCP as long as necessary

Acting Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that the gendarmerie will stay as long as necessary at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint on the border with Turkey to ensure the normal operation of the crossing point.

The reason for sending the gendarmerie are disputes between the private company Eurolab 2011, which has had a monopoly on phytosanitary border control for 10 years, and inspectors from the State Food Agency over who should control the imports.

According to Demerdzhiev, the checkpoint at Kapitan Andreevo is currently functioning as usual. "We cannot afford these conflicts to escalate and lead to more serious tensions," Demerdzhiev said.

At least 500 trucks with food products have been blocked at the checkpoint because of the ongoing dispute, some of which are still there.
