Despite the shortage of milk, its purchase price from farmers is below its cost price

The National Union of Cattle Breeders in Bulgaria insists on urgent measures to save the sector. In an open letter to the Ministry of Agriculture, cattle breeders warn that in the absence of financial assistance, more and more Bulgarian farms will go bankrupt, and the milk shortage will deepen.

Despite the shortage of milk, its purchase price remains below its cost price. The purchase prices are around 1.00 - 1.10 BGN /0.51 - 0.56 EUR/, while the cost price per litre is over 1.30 BGN /0.66 EUR/. The explanation is that due to financial difficulties, farmers reduce the quality of food for animals, and thus the milk also decreases.

High temperatures are also a factor in the lower output,  BNR reported.

The union represents over 400 Bulgarian farmers, producing over 60% of the milk that is processed in Bulgaria.
