On September 7, at 10 p.m. Bulgarian time, the UN Security Council will hold a second meeting in two days, dedicated to the topic of security at the Zaporizhia NPP, which is occupied by the Russian army.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has demanded that Russian and Ukrainian troops pledge not to strike at or from the nuclear plant. As a second step, he proposed an agreement on a "demilitarized perimeter" near the reactors, a withdrawal of Russian units without Ukrainian troops entering the demilitarized zone. Kyiv welcomed the proposal.

Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, also recommended the creation of a "safe zone". In a report, he lists a number of damage to nuclear fuel storage buildings and near the reactors of the Zaporizhia plant. It also warns of understaffing and constant employee stress, which increases the risk of human error.

The Russian ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, called the idea of demilitarization of the Zaporizhzhie nuclear power plant "frivolous", reports BTA.
