60% of Bulgarians have not bought a book in the last year

38% of Bulgarians have not read a single book in the last year, according to a study by Alpha Research, presented on today's International Literacy Day. According to the data, 12% of respondents believe that there is no point in reading, and every tenth person does not have a single book in their home. 

Only 11% of people under 40 describe themselves as avid readers and say they read more than ten books a year. 52% of readers do so on paper, which is a drop of more than 15% compared to 2014. 

Another finding is that 60% of Bulgarians have not bought a single book in the last year. 

"If we see how many of the parents read from time to time, whatever that means, we can very well imagine why children are gradually losing interest in reading," commented Boryana Dimitrova from the sociological agency.
