The authorities in Skopje condemned the booing of the Bulgarian national anthem as it was played before the match between the national football teams of Bulgaria and North Macedonia.

“Sporting events are an ultimate expression of the principles of fair treatment, mutual respect and fair play. Abusing these events so as to spread hatred and intolerance is the exact opposite of what they are all about,” the official statement by the Foreign Ministry of North Macedonia reads. “In the future, North Macedonia and Bulgaria will continue their active efforts towards improving their relations as allies within NATO, future partners within the EU, and above all as good neighbours,” the statement reads.
