Nearly two thirds of parents of children with disabilities in Bulgaria are treated with respect

About 80% of parents of children without disabilities age6 or under believe that physically and intellectually handicapped children suffer because of negative attitudes towards them. 80% of parents of children with disabilities also share this opitnion, indicate data of a nationwide survey commissioned by UNICEF Bulgaria and conducted by the sociological agency Global Metrics. The survey was conducted among parents of children with disabilities aged 6 or under, parents of children without disabilities in the same age group, health professionals and social service specialists.

 According to the survey, 52% of parents of children without disabilities feel pity for children with disabilities. 34% feel insecure because they do not not know how to behave with them, and 35% feel uncomfortable. 93% of the respondents also said they try to behave normally. About 80% of parents of children without disabilities fully or partially agree that children with physical or intellectual disabilities need special education.

Nearly 59% of parents of children with disabilities say that other people usually treat them with respect. Approximately 7% of the parents of children with disabilities and 7% of parents of children without disabilities say that "people often avoid contact with them", or "behave as if they are afraid of them".

According to 62% of parents of children without disabilities, families of children with disabilities are not a burden on society. This view is also shared by 56% of health professionals and 67% of social service professionals.
