A team of cardiac surgeons from the National Heart Hospital has placed a stent in the aorta of a 32-day-old baby with a congenital heart defect.

This was announced by prof. Annie Kaneva, head of the department of pediatric cardiology at the National Cardiology Hospital. The baby boy was born prematurely from a twin pregnancy with a coarctation of the aorta, progressing to severe heart failure and requiring heart surgery.

Due to the baby's extremely low weight of 1 kg (2.205 lb), the medics decided to place a stent at the point of narrowing. The baby's life is now out of danger. Further surgery to remove the stent will be performed when it becomes possible. The boy is recovering well.
