More than 290 firefighters, forest rangers, hunters and volunteers are taking part in the efforts to extinguish the forest fire on the Bulgaria-Greek border in the region of Kirkovo municipality. The fire is still developing along a 20-km. long front, Chief Commissioner Nikolay Nikolov, director of the fire safety and civil protection directorate general stated.
A Bulgarian air force Mi-17 helicopter is also taking part in the efforts. There is no danger to any towns or villages. Nikolay Nikolov explained that the reason why the fire spread so deep into Bulgarian territory is the Southern wind of the past few days.
