Over half a million Bulgarians suffer from diabetes. Another 134,000 are thought to be unaware of it yet, and over 230,000 are pre-diabetic.

November 14 is World Diabetes Day on which awareness is raised towards diabetes prevention.

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease. About 7 million people worldwide get diabetes every year as 70,000 of them are children.

Unlike other diseases, diabetes and prediabetes have no symptoms. Most people accidentally realize that their blood sugar is dangerously high. That's why experts advise everyone to go and test their blood sugar at least once a year.

The main risk factors for diabetes are overweight and genetic predisposition. Regular walking, at least 30 minutes a day, reduces the risk of diabetes by 35-40%.
