Nearly 2,300 pink flamingos inhabit Atanasovsko lake in Burgas. The data are from the last bird census in October, monitored by the "Lagoon of Life" project of the Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation. Flamingo numbers began to increase rapidly in August 2019, when the first large flock of 160 flamingos arrived in Bulgaria.

So far, there are there is no evidence of concern about the potential harmful impact of the colony on the rest of the fauna. The pink flamingo chooses different feeding pools from the traditional bird species in the lake. What is specific about lake Atanasovsko is that it is divided into more than 150 pools separated by dikes. In many of them the water has different salinity, there are different inhabitants and different food for the birds.
