The possibility of having the "Lukoil Neftohim Burgas" refinery under state control is being considered after it became known that the Italian government had taken control over the management of Lukoil's refinery in Italy to serve the country's strategic interests. According to the deputy chairman of the MRF party, Yordan Tsonev, the goal is to ensure cheaper fuel for the Bulgarian citizens.

The parliamentary group of "Democratic Bulgaria" said that they had already drafted a bill that would allow the Bulgarian government to take over the operational control of the refinery if necessary and under very carefully chosen conditions.
