Macedonian-Bulgarian Friendship Society appeals against amendments to North Macedonia's Law on Associations and Foundations

The Macedonian-Bulgarian Friendship Society-Skopje lodged a complaint with the Constitutional Court of the Republic of North Macedonia against the amendments to the Law on Associations and Foundations. The amendments ban associations and foundations in North Macedonia from using the names of persons defined by that country's ideology as "fascist" and "hostile".

The amendments are retroactive, create legal uncertainty and restrict the constitutional right of citizens to associate, the petitioners said. Associations have been given three months to agree their names, symbols, programme and objectives with the authorities. The bans are directly aimed at Bulgarian cultural clubs in Bitola and Ohrid bearing the names of Ivan Mihailov and Tsar Boris III.
