The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and the State Agency for National Security have launched investigation over a report that the "Shipka" Union was committing crimes against the Republic of Bulgaria.
The association defines itself as "a Bulgarian patriotic organization that unites soldiers, officers, sergeants, sailors, midshipmen and employees of the Ministry of the Interior and all citizens who have taken an oath". It was created as an organization to protect the interests of those dismissed from the military structures.
According to the website of Military Union - Bulgarian People's Militia "Shipka", some of their goals include "counteraction, prosecution, neutralization and punishment of any form of treason on the part of the country's top state, military and political leadership".
Later, Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev announced that the SANS was checking the organisation for alleged violations of the law and the Constitution and protection of foreign national interests. "We cannot allow harmful Russian influence in Bulgaria and actions that harm not only our national interest but also the interests of our European partners," the prosecutor said.
