Ukraine braces for attacks on New Year's Eve

Dozens of villages remain under Russian artillery shelling on the front line in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhya and Kherson regions. Areas in the eastern Kharkiv region and in the north, near Chernihiv, are also under attack. 

Tonight, Kiev is preparing for massive Russian attacks like the ones on Christmas Eve. Over the past twenty-four hours, Russian forces have shelled the territory of Kherson region 60 times, Yaroslav Yanushevich, the region's governor, wrote on Telegram. Settlements in the district were shelled by artillery, anti-aircraft missile weapons, mortars and tanks, and two people were wounded. The city of Kherson itself was attacked 31 times. A gas pipeline, residential and other private buildings were damaged. 

According to the Kiev military administration, air raid sirens have sounded 638 times since the invasion of Kiev. The city was the target of 52 air strikes, which killed 120 people, including five children, and injured 495 people. 

The missile strikes have damaged over 600 buildings, severely damaging Kiev's vital infrastructure.
