The Government adopted a draft amendment to the Bulgarian Identity Documents Act. It will allow Bulgarian citizens' identity cards to contain electronic identity certificates.

They can be used for electronic identification under the Electronic Identification Act. Passports can also contain electronic identity certificates, as can residence permits issued to foreigners in the country. It is also envisaged that passports with a validity of up to 10 years can be issued under certain conditions.

In case of a lost, stolen or destroyed identity document, a birth certificate will also be required when applying for a new identity document.
