DB: Plovdiv Fair to be declared a cultural monument to prevent its demolition

The Plovdiv Fair be declared a monument of culture, insist Democratic Bulgaria MPs. "This will prevent the demolition of the pavilions and the start of large-scale development on 350 hectares practically in the central part of the city," said Yordan Ivanov of the DB.

The proposal is related to the acquisition of 79% of the shares of the landmark fair, which has existed since 1892, by Georgi Gergov. According to many, Gergov resorted to scheming to acquire an attractive plot of land in the centre of Plovdiv.

Gergov, a businessman and former regional leader of the BSP, is honorary consul of the Russian Federation in Plovdiv and a Russian citizen.
