Washington  sanctions Bulgarian officials, firms for corruption, adding them to Magnitsky list

The names of former ministers and senior party members of the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and GERB have been added to the updated list of persons sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act, BTA reported. 

The US Treasury Department on Friday announced sanctions on five current and former Bulgarian officials, as well as five entities accused of illicit personal gain, undermining the country’s democratic institutions and perpetuating “corrosive dependence on Russian energy sources". 

The department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today sanctioned Rumen Ovcharov, Alexander Nikolov, Ivan Genov, Nikolay Malinov and Vladislav Goranov - for their extensive involvement in corrupt activities in Bulgaria, the Treasury Department said in a press release distributed by the U.S. Embassy in Sofia. The United States supports its NATO ally, Bulgaria, in combating both deep-rooted corruption and Russian influence undermining democratic institutions," said Brian E. Bryan B. Nelson, Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.
The current measure is a continuation of previous U.S. sanctions against Delyan Peevski, Vasil Bozhkov, Ilko Zhelyazkov and related companies. Today, the UK also imposed sanctions on Peevski, Bozhkov and Zhelyazkov based on the UK's Global Sanctions Regime to counter corruption.
