An injured golden eagle was rescued by experts of the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water-Plovdiv. The bird is one of the rarest in Bulgaria and in the world, it is protected in Bulgaria by the Biological Diversity Act and is listed in the Red Data Book.

The bird was found by the road between Plovdiv and Smolyan, in the area of the village of Bachkovo. Most likely it had suffered an accident related to electric shock when landing on a power line. The team of Plovdiv Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water has transported the injured eagle to the Wildlife Rescue Centre in Stara Zagora for treatment, where specialists from Green Balkans have already taken care of it.

After its recovery, the bird will be released in the area where it was found.

According to the Red Data Book of Bulgaria, there are probably 120-150 pairs of this species left today. Destruction of natural habitats, disturbance during nesting, poaching and poisoning through poison baits for wolves, foxes and jackals, which is illegal in the country, are among the most common threats to the golden eagle.
