Bulgarian Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov confirmed that he had received a letter from EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borell requesting Bulgaria to provide ammunition to Ukraine.

Yesterday, Mr Borell sent letters to all the defence ministers of the member states calling on them to provide Ukraine with the ammunition in their stockpiles. According to Mr Stoyanov, there are explicit provisions on the amount of ammunition that Bulgaria must maintain at all times. If these stocks are compromised, the foundations and capabilities of the Bulgarian army will be undermined, Stoyanov said.

Stoyanov said the ministry was strictly implementing the National Assembly's decision on aid to Ukraine. "Sending anti-aircraft missile complexes to Ukraine without replacing them with other systems means only one thing - loss of air sovereignty. Given that the Bulgarian fighter aviation is in poor condition, giving our anti-aircraft missile complexes is a huge disadvantage and we will not be able to protect the Bulgarian skies," the minister was adamant.
