The painting by Jackson Pollock found in Bulgaria has a dedication on the back thought to have been written by the artist himself, to Hollywood star from the first half of the 20th century Lauren Bacall on the occasion of her birthday in 1949. This information was disclosed at a briefing by the prosecutor’s office today.

If the painting is authenticated that would mean that it was initially a personal gift from Pollock to Bacall. Besides the dedication, according to public service TV BNT, the painting was once part of the collection of Romanian communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. Deputy Sofia city prosecutor Desislava Petrova stated that how the painting found its way into Bulgaria was yet to be investigated. The prosecutor’s office has requested one more authentication even though two have already been carried out indicating that the painting technique and the paint colours match the ones from other works by Jackson Pollock.
