Bulgaria to request a one-off exception to the budget deficit criterion

"Bulgaria needs to defend an active position regarding the EU fiscal rules reform which appearto be gaining momentum. As a country with one of the best debt-to-GDP ratios, it should receive support and not be penalized, if within one year the budget deficit is slightly above 3% of the GDP", caretaker Deputy Premier for EU Funds Management Atanas Pekanov said in an interview with Investor.bg.

“Say that, for instance, Bulgaria‘s deficit is slightly over 3%, but its government debt accounts for 25% of its GDP. In this case, the country should not be in a worse position than a country in which the deficit is 1% of the gross domestic product, but the government debt is 140% of the GDP", Atanas Pekanov said.
