“The Black Sea region has become a key strategic zone of confrontation between Russia and the West. Bulgaria supports an enhanced commitment by NATO, guided by the understanding that NATO’s Eastern flank and the Black Sea region are an important segment of Euro-Atlantic area security,” said Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov at a defence forum in Sofia.

Deputy Defence Minister Teodora Genchovska stated that Bulgaria was currently developing a national defence strategy with a special focus on the Black Sea.

On his part, Admiral Stuart Munsch (Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Europe/Commander, U.S. Naval Forces, Africa/Commander, Allied Joint Forces Command, Naples) stated that the strategy, which includes diplomatic and economic efforts, was fully supported by the US government, adding that the Black Sea region posed a number of threats and risks, which is why the US maintains the joint efforts for coping with these threats.
