Bulgarian teachers will go on strike if they don't receive raise in salaries

If the vote on the state budget is delayed, the teachers will go on strike because they cannot get what was agreed on from January 1 of this year as an increase in their salaries, the chairperson of the Bulgarian Teachers' Union, Yanka Takeva, told BNT. 

She explained that there is a shortage of teachers in secondary schools in mathematics, informatics, biology, foreign languages. 

"For young teachers to enter the classrooms, they must have another incentive," she stressed. That is why the trade union is proposing that the starting salary for university graduates be 1,900 leva (972 euros). 

According to Takeva, 5-6 thousand teachers are currently needed throughout the country. However, many retired teachers are currently employed to ease the shortage of teachers.
