Bulgarians most susceptible to disinformation in the EU

Bulgaria occupies the last place among the countries of the European Union in the Media Literacy Index this year, announced the Open Society Institute - Sofia Фoundation. This means that Bulgarians believe misinformation the most.

Bulgaria is ahead of its neighbours Turkey and the Republic of North Macedonia, and out of a total of 41 European countries evaluated, it ranks 35th.

Compared to the 2022 index, however, it falls two places.

According to the study, Bulgaria performs worst in terms of indicators related to education and media freedom, and best in terms of indicators for new forms of civic participation.

"Worryingly, most of the countries most vulnerable to disinformation are also closest to the war in Ukraine started by Russia, and are among the most exposed to malicious disinformation," commented the author of the analysis, Marin Lesenski.
