The Parliamentary Committee on Policies for Bulgarians Abroad approved at first reading the budget for Bulgarian communities abroad. The financial framework, presented by the Council of Ministers on 5 July, provides for an increase of about BGN 1 million (EUR 511 689) for policies related to Bulgarian Sunday schools abroad, Deputy Minister of Education and Science Marietta Georgieva said. In 2023, a total of 13.6 million leva is earmarked for native language and culture schools abroad, she added.

Funding will also continue for the Taraclia State University in Moldova, as well as for qualification and language courses in the summer for pedagogical specialists who teach in Bulgarian Sunday schools, BTA reported.

Deputy Culture Minister Viktor Stoyanov raised the issue of funding Bulgarian cultural institutes abroad. He pointed out that over the years these institutes have proved that they can conduct extremely good cultural diplomacy. Currently, however, due to lack of funding, most of them have been closed down.
