An extremely rare natural phenomenon with a brown bear has been recorded with a photo trap on the territory of the Karabalkan Hunting Range near Bulgaria's Chepelare in the Rhodope Mountain. A bear was filmed taking care of her four cubs and teaching them to forage for themselves.

The brown bear is the largest predator found in Bulgarian nature and usually gives birth to one, rarely two cubs. The cases of three cubs from one mother are rare.

The brown bear normally gives birth to her cubs in early January, during her hibernation. They are born blind and weigh up to 500 g. They leave the den when they reach 3-4 kg. They grow very slowly and at the age of two they reach about 60 kg. They stay with their mother usually for 2 years.
