The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee has filed a report with acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov, demanding that Vazrazhdane party be dissolved. The document, signed by over 100 public figures, civil activists and intellectuals, states that with its activities, the political formation and its leader Kostadin Kostadinov aim to destroy democratic rule of law.

The Bulgarian Helsinki Committee enumerates instances in which Vazrazhdane has broken the Political Parties Act and the Constitution – among them acts of anti-Semitism and inciting hatred for refugees, Roma, representatives of the LGBTI community.

“When a party applies, or calls for violence, and sets as its aim the abolition of the established democratic model and its replacement with a government that is repressive in nature, the state is obligated to take steps to restrict it,” the report reads.

At the end of June, the government condemned Vazrazhdane’s calls to violence and urged the prosecutor’s office, the president and the political parties to react.
