Translator Angela Rodel awarded for popularising Bulgarian culture

The USA-born translator Angela Rodel was awarded the Contribution to the Development of Bulgarian Culture award by the Minister of Culture Krastyu Krastev. The prestigious prize was awarded for Angela Rodel's contribution to the popularisation of Bulgarian culture and her translation of Georgi Gospodinov's novel Vremeubezhishte (Time Shelter), for which she won the prestigious international Booker Award for Literature together with the distinguished Bulgarian author.
While studying Linguistics at Yale University, Angela Rodel joined a women's choir and heard Bulgarian folk music for the first time. She began collecting recordings of folk songs, thus learning the language all on her own. After graduating in the USA, she enrolled in Bulgarian Philology at Sofia University. She has translated books by a number of Bulgarian authors - Angel Igov, Virginia Zaharieva, Milen Ruskov, Zahari Karabashliev, Ivaylo Petrov, Georgi Markov, Georgi Gospodinov, Vera Mutafchieva. Her translations have won awards, including the 2016 National Translation Award from the American Literary Translators Association.
In 2014, Minneapolis, Minnesota, translator Angela Rodel received Bulgarian citizenship for her work and contribution to Bulgarian culture. Thanks to her, Georgi Gospodanov's work is known in the USA.
