The passing summer in Plovdiv was filled with musical events - a trend that continues in autumn. As the city's celebration of September 6 approaches, the programme is brimming with cultural events.
Tonight, at the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv, the National School of Music and Dance celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of its patron, the legendary conductor Dobrin Petkov. The school's Dobrin Petkov Symphony Orchestra and their concert "Plovdiv - Stars of Music" will be the opening event of the Autumn Arts Salon. Former graduates of the school, including Marin Yonchev - tenor, Nelly Koycheva - contralto, now living in Japan, will take the stage as soloists together with the Symphony Orchestra of the school under the baton of Konstantin Dobroykov. It is a not so well known fact that Nelly Koycheva was the first opera singing teacher of the world star soprano Sonya Yoncheva. The concert will also feature the school's graduate - violinist Moni Simeonov, who works in the USA, and one of the most successful contemporary Bulgarian conductors, Nayden Todorov - director and chief conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic. Violinist Midori Goto (USA) will also take part in the event.
Another art event begins today – the Stantsionna Street Festival. It will be held until September 6 on Ivan Vazov Street, known decades ago as Ulica Stantsionna (Station Street) - connecting the railway station with Plovdiv's Central Square.
The Festival is a full-day event. Gamers will have the chance to meet Bulgarian gaming celebrities, see what's new in the indie gaming, and the first Indie Game Showcase in Bulgaria.
Bulgarian and foreign artists will be featured in the music programme. On the 6th of September, when it is the National Unification Day and the holiday of Plovdiv, the world-famous caval performer Teodosii Spasov and his Folk Quintet will close the first edition of the Ulica Stantsionna Festival.
