Politicians, public figures, journalists and athletes have announced an initiative to keep March 3 as Bulgaria's national holiday. Among the participants in the initiative, presented by MEP Petar Vitanov, are former President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Acad. Ivan Juchnowski, former President Georgi Parvanov and others.

In Vitanov's words, the initiative arose as a result of people's indignation at the proposal to change Bulgaria's national holiday from March 3 to May 24, which is now celebrated as the Day of the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian and Slavic script, of education, culture and literature.
Defenders of March 3 as a national holiday of Bulgaria say that this date is the culmination of centuries of struggle for the liberation of our country from Ottoman rule. The initiative announced its readiness to raise the issue of preserving the date of March 3 through a national referendum.

According to Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov, the place for such a discussion is in Parliament.
