ALDE adopts resolution calling for immediate removal of the veto on Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area

The Council of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) Party has adopted a resolution on the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen. The resolution was proposed by the Bulgarian Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) which is a member of ALDE.

ALDE calls on the European Council to immediately remove the veto on Bulgaria and Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area. “The unjustified veto against Bulgaria and Romania's accession to the Schengen Area has many negative consequences: it violates the principle of law-based decisions, thereby harming the reputation of the European Union in accession countries, feeds into populist anti-EU propaganda, discriminates against citizens and businesses, and raises the cost of trade. (…) The accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen Area would strengthen the EU's external borders, improve cooperation between law enforcement agencies, and boost economic growth and trade. It would also be a powerful symbol of European unity and solidarity,” the resolution reads. ALDE calls on the Council's Spanish presidency to treat the matter with urgency and schedule a vote on the matter before the end of 2023.
