Today is Archangel All Souls' Day

Photo: BGNES

The third and last All Souls’ Day for the year - Archangel All Souls' Day - a day on which we honour the memory of the dead, falls on the Saturday before the day of Archangel Michael, 8 November. It is also dedicated to the fallen soldiers, that is why in some parts of Bulgaria it is called Male All Souls’ Day.

According to Orthodox tradition, memorial services are held in churches, and believers go to the graves of their loved ones, where they pour wine and light a candle as a symbol of faith and the immortality of the soul. Finally, they lay down flowers next to the portrait of the deceased as a reminder of their virtues.
