In a breathtakingly beautiful corner of the Rhodope Mountain there rises a veritable wonder of nature – the Gyullek waterfall. Few people are even aware that it is there, as it is very much off the beaten track. But more and more tourists have started coming here to commune with nature and feel the life force of the waterfall. Autumn, the season when the mountain is at its most beautiful, is the perfect season for taking a hike to the waterfall tucked away in the mountain’s bosom.
Here is a brief video from Gyullek waterfall by BNR-Radio Kurdzhali
The waterfall, whose name means “one that roars loudly”, is close to a picturesque village called Daskalovo in the municipality of Chernoochene. It is not very tall – the water comes down from a height of about 10 metres, but the view is magnificent. The locals say the waterfall “operates” all the year round, i.e. it never dries up, even in the hottest days of August.
Gyullek is easy of access, and is well suited for hikes by families with small children. Cars can be parked by the side of the road, especially where there is a widening in the road, after which there is a gentle slope of approximately 1.5 kilometres. A distance easy to walk, especially when the surrounding scenery can take anyone’s breath away.
One place in the area which is well-worth visiting is the stone village Nenkovo, with its rope bridge which is its only link to civilization.
In the nearby rocks there are marks – mysterious trapezoidal niches carved out thousands of years ago. And it is not just there – the whole of the Eastern Rhodopes are studded with signs of mysterious human activity. One more place worth visiting in the vicinity of Gyllek waterfall is the cave called “The Womb” not far from Nenkovo village.
