Sofia proclaimed World Capital of Sport for 2024

With a solemn ceremony, Sofia was officially proclaimed the World Capital of Sport for 2024. More than 400 people in the crowded Great Hall of the European Parliament in Brussels participated in the ceremony. Some of the most popular and beloved Bulgarian sport champions were present. The event was attended by representatives of cities and municipalities from all over Europe, guests from the European Commission, MEPs, businessmen and artists. 

A special place in the delegation was occupied by the chairman of the Organizing Committee and until recently Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandakova. 

With a video, Sofia presented what has been done so far regarding the initiative and the program for 2024.  As the 2024 World Capital of Sport, the Bulgarian capital will organize over 310 events and will be the host and organizer of the 5th World Sports Meeting.

With the intention of sport reaching everyone, embracing the diversity of different age and social groups, the World City of Sport initiative was introduced by ACES EUROPE in collaboration with UNESCO. The first World Capital of Sports in 2019 is Abu Dhabi, for 2020-2021 it was Guadalajara, for 2022 - Madrid, in 2023 - the city of Konya in Turkey. The world capital of sports after Sofia in 2025 will be Monaco, and for 2026 the candidates are Baku and Naples.
