Amazon Web Services is donating $1 million to the Institute of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT) at the University of Sofia, the Ministry of Education has announced.

The funds are being provided based on demonstrated high performance and growth potential, and will be used for research in formal methods. It will be used to cover salaries to attract leading researchers, as well as scholarships for PhD and undergraduate students. A strategic partnership between INSAIT researchers and engineers and Amazon Web Services is also being started. INSAIT is the first world-class research institute in Eastern Europe, modelled on the world's leading research centres, and has joined Meta and IBM's global AI alliance.

INSAIT opened in April 2022. It was created in partnership with two of the world's leading technology universities, ETH Zurich and EPFL Lausanne, with support from the Bulgarian government and technology innovators Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google and DeepMind.
